A Weekend Away

Yev and I spent time alone this weekend for the first time since we had children. To be honest, I didn’t expect it to happen this soon, but boy was I grateful. It was really wonderful to pack a bag for myself without a single diaper or wipe in sight. I grabbed a bunch of dresses, sandals, and a bathing suit. I was ready for anything.

I had cousins in town from the East Coast who I only see when there’s a wedding, but when we all get together, it’s as if no time has passed. Spending time with them was such a blessing. I had four amazing days with my mom’s side of the family, and it was really hard to leave. I definitely missed the girls, but it feels like I never have enough time with my cousins.

I always wanted to be that kid who went on family vacations with lots of family members, lots of friends, or both! Unfortunately, I grew up somewhat isolated from my extended family because almost everyone is on the East Coast. So whenever my family did come together, it was really awesome but really short.

Yev and I have even discussed moving back East, but they just have so much weather. I am definitely not tough enough to brave the snow or the humidity or the ice or the rain. I just can’t hang. The idea of pumping gas in the snow or bundling my children up to play in the backyard stresses me out. My kids are pretty much naked all of the time, except for when we leave the house. I can barely keep a dress on them, let alone an entire snow suit. I have a lot of respect for my East Coast family. I just wish they lived closer!

And the best part about that side of the family is that my husband fits in seamlessly. If Yev wasn’t the biggest giant Russian you’ve ever seen in your life, you would think he was the blood relative, not me. And this has made family occasions that much more fun.
